The Patterns and Values of Volunteering in the Czech and Norwegian Societies

2009–2010

Principal Investigator: Pavol Frič


The project was supported within the framework of Norway Grants and EEA Grants and implemented in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University in Prague, and Institute for Social Research, Oslo. Its objective was to identify the diversity of volunteering patterns in the Czech Republic, including their institutional settings, and constitutive social interactions in different parts of the Czech and Norwegian societies. The project compared the different parameters of volunteering (frequency, motivation, values, type of organisational setting etc.) and their institutional mechanisms in different social contexts and parts of society.



Civil Society and New Forms of Governance in Europe - The Making of European Citizenship - Network of excellence (CINEFOGO)

2005–2009

Principal Investigator: Martin Potůček


Within this Network of Excellence project under the 6th EU Framework Program, the CESES collaborated in a consortium of more than 40 universities and research centres. The mission of this network was to generate and disseminate findings about the development of citizenship and overlapping identities as well as to overcome civic apathies and social exclusion in Europe. Denmark’s Roskilde University was the principal project coordinator. The CESES was the network’s main coordinator for activities aimed at an effective transfer of scientific evidence and best practices on to multiple target groups at various European Community levels; it was also the national coordinator for the Czech Republic.



The Role of Organized Civil Society in the Governance of Transition in the Czech Republic (CISOCICZ)

2006–2009

Principal Investigator: Jürgen Grote (University of Konstanz)


This was a project under the 6th EU Framework Program, approved by the European Commission as part of the Marie Curie Chair Program. The CESES and the Department of Public and Social Policy of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, hosted Dr. Jürgen Grote, who analyzed the interdependences and strategic behaviours of public and private sector organizations.



Monitoring Quality of Life in an Enlarged Europe

2003–2007

Principal Investigator: Martin Potůček


The CESES became an institutional member of the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (Dublin, Ireland) and the Wissenschaftszentrum für Sozialforschung (Berlin, Germany) which undertook an international comparative survey of living conditions and quality of life in old and new EU member states.



Millennium Development Goals for the Czech Republic

2003 – 2004

The project aimed at preparing an implementation report on the Millennium Development Goals in the Czech Republic in collaboration with the UNDP.



Mental Health and Policy Research Training Program

2002–2007

Principal Investigator: Martin Potůček


The shared project of the CESES and The School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley, aimed at implementing a high-profile programme of interdisciplinary study in the US for economists, sociologists, psychologists, physicians as well as postdoctoral researchers in other social and political sciences.



The Third Sector and the Development of European Public Policy

2002–2005

Principal Investigator: Pavol Frič


This project under the 5th EU Framework Program brought together nine EU member states and the Czech Republic in order to analyse the effects of EU policy on the individual countries’ public policies relevant to the non-governmental sector.



Dynamics of Transformation of Czech Social Protection System in Context of Globalization and European Construction

2002–2004

Principal Investigator: Martin Potůček


The project was part of an international EU COST A 15 project entitled, “Reforming Social Protection System in Europe: Comparing Dynamics of Transformation of Social Protection System in Context of Globalization and European Construction”, which primarily aimed at disseminating knowledge about reform processes within European social security systems in the context of globalization and European integration.



Expert Knowledge and Policy-Making: Sharing the Czech and American Experience

2002–2003

The objective of this project was to identify similarities and differences in the methods of cooperation and communication between the CESES, the Centre for Higher Education Studies, and the University of Georgia, Athens, USA.



National Human Development Report for the Czech Republic

2002–2003

Principal Investigator: Martin Potůček


The goal of this project in cooperation with the International Labour Organisation and the UNDP was to prepare a National Human Development Report for the Czech Republic 2003 and submit it for discussion at a national conference about social and economic developments over the past decade.



Millennium Project

2001–2005

From 2001 to 2005, the CESES was one of the research “nodes” of the Millennium Project (United Nations University, Washington DC) in Central and Eastern Europe. The Millennium Project think tank connects different institutional, disciplinary and geographic orientations. Its research nodes bring together local and global knowledge in 11 regions over the world.
